Universities and Programs in the UAE

The UAE has about 75 accredited higher-education institutions. For international students, the choices concentrate into three groups: federal universities, UAE-founded research institutions, and international branch campuses. Each has a different purpose, cost, and admissions profile.

Federal Universities

The three federal universities are the backbone of Emirati higher education. They primarily serve UAE nationals but accept international students.

United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) — Al Ain

The country's oldest (founded 1976) and largest federal university. 14,000+ students, 1,000+ international. Strong in engineering (mechanical, electrical, civil), medicine, veterinary science, agriculture, and IT. Classic large-campus experience in Al Ain (a quieter desert oasis city, 90 minutes from Abu Dhabi). Tuition AED 50,000-80,000/year for internationals.

Zayed University — Abu Dhabi and Dubai

Founded 1998 as a women-only federal institution, now co-educational. Strong in media and communication, business, education, and sustainability. Two campuses — Abu Dhabi (larger, main) and Dubai (near Dubai International Academic City). 10,000 students, smaller international share. Tuition AED 45,000-70,000/year for internationals.

Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) — all seven emirates

17 campuses across the UAE. Applied-sciences focus: engineering technology, business, health sciences, education, applied media. Degree programs up to Master's. More accessible admissions bar than UAEU or Zayed. Tuition AED 35,000-55,000/year.

Private UAE Universities

American University of Sharjah (AUS)

Founded 1997, AACSB-accredited business school and ABET-accredited engineering. 5,000+ students, strongly international. Located in Sharjah (30 minutes from Dubai). Tuition AED 95,000-110,000/year. Strong in business, engineering, architecture, communication, and design.

American University in Dubai (AUD)

Frequently Asked Questions

Which UAE university is best for engineering?
Khalifa University is the top choice for research-oriented engineering — strong in aerospace, petroleum, nuclear, and AI. The American University of Sharjah is excellent for undergraduate engineering with ABET-accredited programs. Heriot-Watt Dubai offers British-accredited BEng/MEng degrees. UAEU in Al Ain has a large engineering college with mechanical, electrical, and civil programs.
Is NYU Abu Dhabi really free?
Effectively yes, for most admitted students. NYUAD is need-blind for US applicants and meets 100% of demonstrated financial need for all admitted students. This typically covers tuition (USD 57,000/year), housing, meals, health insurance, and 2 round-trip flights home per year. Students from families earning under USD 75,000/year often pay zero; middle-income families contribute a small parent share.
What does MBZUAI cost?
Nothing for admitted students. MBZUAI covers full tuition plus a monthly stipend of AED 8,000 (Master's) or AED 10,000 (PhD), a laptop, and health insurance. Students only pay personal expenses like phone, entertainment, and travel. In return, MBZUAI requires strong engagement in research and often teaching assistantships. It's the world's first dedicated AI graduate university, founded in 2019.
Are branch-campus degrees equivalent to home-campus degrees?
Yes, for accreditation purposes. Your NYU Abu Dhabi degree says 'New York University' with identical regalia. Heriot-Watt Dubai graduates receive the same BEng/MEng as Edinburgh. Manchester MBA students get the University of Manchester MBA. The branch campuses hold home-country accreditation (Middle States for NYU, GCC Accreditation for Heriot-Watt, AACSB for Manchester). Some branches have joint authorization from the UAE Ministry of Education.
Which university for business and finance?
American University of Sharjah has the strongest undergraduate business school (AACSB-accredited). Manchester Dubai is the regional leader for MBA and Master's in management. NYU Abu Dhabi has a respected Economics and Business program. Heriot-Watt's Edinburgh Business School offers MBAs remotely with Dubai intensives. Khalifa has strong fintech and entrepreneurship offerings at postgraduate level.
Can I study in Arabic?
Yes, at federal universities (UAEU, Zayed, HCT). Programs in Islamic studies, Arabic literature, law (Sharia), and some humanities are taught in Arabic. However, the vast majority of programs — even at federal universities — are English-medium. Private and branch campuses teach only in English, with minimal Arabic requirements for cultural context.
Which university has the best campus life?
NYU Abu Dhabi has the strongest on-campus community — Saadiyat Island campus with residence halls, arts facilities, and 24/7 amenities; students are required to live on campus. American University of Sharjah also has a classic US-style residential campus. Heriot-Watt Dubai, Curtin Dubai, and RIT Dubai are more commuter-oriented. UAEU in Al Ain has a full residential experience with separate gender campuses.
Which universities have the highest graduate employment rates?
NYU Abu Dhabi reports 95%+ graduate employment or grad-school placement within 6 months. Khalifa University graduates have strong placements into ADNOC, EDGE Group, and Etihad. AUS graduates place well into regional banks, PwC, Deloitte, and consulting. Manchester Dubai MBA graduates average 30-40% salary increases within 12 months.
