UAE University Admissions: The Full Process

The UAE has no centralized admissions system like UCAS (UK) or Uni-Assist (Germany). Each university runs its own portal, timeline, and document requirements. The good news: the process is fast, English-friendly, and mostly digital. The bad news: you need to track multiple deadlines and — for federal and private UAE universities — navigate document attestation.

This guide breaks down admissions by institution type, with real deadlines, required documents, and test cut-offs for 2026 intake.

Timeline: When to Start

Work backwards from your target intake.

IntakeApplications openMain deadlinesDecisionsArrival
September 2026August 2025November 2025 - May 2026December 2025 - June 2026August-September 2026
January 2027 (spring, limited)July 2026October-November 2026November-December 2026January 2027

Most Bachelor's programs admit only for September. Master's and PhD programs often have both September and January intakes.

Required Documents (Typical Bachelor's Package)

  • Passport — valid at least 6 months beyond your expected arrival
  • High-school diploma — final certificate showing graduation
  • High-school transcripts — grades for all 3-4 years
  • English proficiency test — IELTS Academic or TOEFL iBT (see scores below)
  • Standardized test — SAT, ACT, or EmSAT (optional at many universities)
  • Personal statement / essays — 500-1,500 words (required at NYUAD, AUS, AUD, Khalifa)
  • Recommendation letters — 2-3 from teachers or counselors (selective universities)
  • Passport photo — digital, 600x600 pixels minimum
  • Application fee receipt — AED 0-500 depending on university

Master's applicants additionally submit: Bachelor's diploma and transcripts, CV/resume, statement of purpose (1,000-2,000 words), 2-3 academic references, and for some programs GRE or GMAT.

Exemptions: students whose secondary schooling was delivered fully in English (UK, US, Canadian, Australian, Indian CBSE/ICSE English-medium) often don't need to submit a test — confirm with each university.

Document Attestation (Federal and Most Private UAE Universities)

If you're applying to UAEU, Zayed, HCT, Khalifa, AUS, AUD, MBZUAI, or Sorbonne Abu Dhabi, you must attest your foreign documents. Branch campuses (NYUAD, Heriot-Watt, Manchester, Curtin, RIT, Middlesex) usually skip this.

Three-step attestation:

  1. Home country — Ministry of Education or equivalent stamps your diploma and transcripts. Some countries require an apostille (if party to the Hague Convention), but the UAE is not a Hague member, so you need full attestation.
  2. UAE Embassy in home country — stamps the already-authenticated documents. Costs USD 40-80 per document, takes 3-10 days.
  3. UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) — final attestation upon arrival in the UAE. You or the university's admissions office handles this. Costs AED 150 per document, takes 1-3 days.

Start attestation 3-6 months before your application deadline. Universities accept conditional applications while attestation is in progress.

University-Specific Application Portals

  • NYU Abu Dhabi — Common Application at commonapp.org, plus NYUAD-specific supplement
  • MBZUAI — apply.mbzuai.ac.ae (no application fee)
  • Khalifa University — admissions.ku.ac.ae
  • American University of Sharjah — aus.edu/apply
  • American University in Dubai — aud.edu/apply
  • Heriot-Watt Dubai — hw.ac.uk/dubai/study/applying.htm (shared with Edinburgh)
  • Manchester Dubai — manchester.ae
  • Curtin Dubai — curtindubai.ac.ae
  • UAE University — admissions.uaeu.ac.ae
  • Zayed University — zu.ac.ae/main/en/admissions
  • HCT — hct.ac.ae/en/admissions

Application fees: AED 0 at MBZUAI and most federal universities; AED 300-500 at AUS, AUD, Khalifa; USD 80 at NYU Abu Dhabi (waived for need).

Application Strategy

  1. Pick 5-7 universities across tiers — 1-2 stretch (NYUAD, MBZUAI), 2-3 target (Khalifa, AUS, Heriot-Watt), 2 safety (federal universities, AUD).
  2. Take IELTS early — book 4-6 months before application deadlines. Results take 13 days.
  3. Start attestation in parallel — don't wait for offers. You'll need attested documents for visa applications anyway.
  4. Tailor essays — NYU Abu Dhabi rewards internationally-minded, globally-curious applicants. Khalifa and MBZUAI want research passion and specific faculty interest.
  5. Apply to scholarships within the same portal — most UAE universities consider all applicants for scholarships automatically; no separate application.

Next Steps

Once offers arrive:

  • Accept the best offer and pay the enrollment deposit (AED 2,000-10,000 at most universities)
  • Start the visa process — see our Visa and Arrival guide
  • Review costs and funding — the Costs and Funding guide covers tuition, living expenses, and scholarships

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I apply to UAE universities?
For September 2026 intake, start 10-12 months ahead. NYU Abu Dhabi Early Decision is November 1, 2025; Regular Decision is January 5, 2026. MBZUAI main deadline is December 15 for September intake (rolling after). Khalifa, AUS, and branch campuses typically have deadlines between January and May. Federal universities (UAEU, Zayed, HCT) have rolling admissions until July but fill popular programs early.
What English test do I need?
Most UAE universities require IELTS Academic 6.0-6.5 or TOEFL iBT 79-90 overall. NYU Abu Dhabi and MBZUAI require IELTS 7.0 / TOEFL 100. Khalifa University accepts 6.5 / 90. Federal universities accept EmSAT English 1100-1400 as an alternative. Students from fully English-medium schools may be exempt — check each university's policy.
Do I need to attest my documents?
Yes, for federal universities and most private UAE universities (Khalifa, AUS, MBZUAI). You must attest your high-school diploma, transcripts, and in some cases birth certificate — first by the issuing country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs or notary, then by the UAE Embassy in your country, and finally by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) upon arrival. Budget 4-8 weeks and AED 300-600 in fees. Branch campuses (Heriot-Watt, Manchester, NYUAD) usually don't require embassy attestation.
How competitive is NYU Abu Dhabi?
Very. NYU Abu Dhabi admits around 200-250 students per year from a global applicant pool of 15,000+ — a 3-4% acceptance rate, comparable to Harvard. Admissions are need-blind for US citizens and holistic for all applicants, weighing academics, essays, activities, and a required Candidate Weekend visit (fully funded for finalists).
Can I apply without SAT or ACT?
Many universities made SAT/ACT optional or test-blind after 2020. NYU Abu Dhabi is test-optional for Class of 2030 (2026 applicants) but recommends scores for strong candidates. Federal universities accept EmSAT in place of SAT. AUS, AUD, and most branch campuses are test-optional. Khalifa University requires SAT 1200+ or EmSAT equivalents for competitive engineering programs.
What documents do I need for application?
Standard package: (1) passport copy, valid 6+ months beyond intake, (2) high-school diploma and transcripts (attested for federal unis), (3) IELTS or TOEFL score report, (4) SAT/ACT/EmSAT if required, (5) personal statement or essays (NYUAD, AUS, AUD), (6) 2-3 recommendation letters for selective universities, (7) CV for Master's/PhD applicants, (8) portfolio for architecture/design. Master's applicants also need Bachelor's transcripts and often GRE/GMAT.
How do I apply to multiple universities?
Each university has its own portal. NYU Abu Dhabi uses the Common Application; MBZUAI, Khalifa, AUS, and branch campuses use their own online portals (direct-apply). Federal universities use a unified system for UAE residents — international students apply directly to UAEU, Zayed University, or HCT websites. Application fees range from AED 0 (MBZUAI) to AED 500 (AUS).
When do I hear back?
Most universities respond within 4-8 weeks of submission. NYU Abu Dhabi Early Decision results arrive mid-December; Regular Decision results mid-March. MBZUAI reviews rolling and typically responds within 6 weeks. Khalifa and federal universities respond within 4-6 weeks. Branch campuses often issue conditional offers within 2-3 weeks, subject to final grades and English scores.
Can I apply as a transfer student?
Yes. Most UAE universities accept transfer students with 12-30 credit hours completed elsewhere. You submit original application plus a course-by-course transcript evaluation (some require WES or equivalent). Credit transfer varies — expect to lose 20-40% of your prior credits when switching systems. Apply at least 6 months before target semester.
