Country-by-Country Deadline Details
Germany
Germany is the most popular study destination in Europe. Most public universities use uni-assist to process international applications. The hard deadline for Winter Semester 2026/27 is July 15, 2026 — uni-assist needs at least six weeks to process documents before universities set their own cutoffs. Some universities have earlier individual deadlines: TU Munich closes on May 31 for many programs, Heidelberg on May 15 for medicine. Submit your documents to uni-assist before the university's own deadline.
Bachelor's programs taught in German require at least DSH-2 or TestDaF 4x4. English-taught Master's programs follow their own timelines — check each program page directly. Fees run from free at most public universities to around €1,500/semester in Baden-Württemberg for non-EU students.
See our full guide: Study in Germany.
Netherlands
The Netherlands runs a centralized portal called Studielink. For programs with a numerus fixus (enrollment cap) — medicine, psychology, law at many universities — the deadline is May 1, 2026. Miss it and you cannot enter that program in 2026. For programs without a cap, you can apply until September 1, 2026, though universities recommend May for scholarship eligibility. Tuition for EU students is around €2,530/year; for non-EU it's €8,000–€20,000 depending on program.
See our full guide: Study in the Netherlands.
United Kingdom
The main UCAS round for September 2026 entry closed in January 2026. If you missed it, you have two options. First: apply through UCAS Extra (open until July 4, 2026) for courses still with vacancies. Second: wait for UCAS Clearing, which opens on July 5, 2026. Clearing is not a backup for bad grades — hundreds of excellent courses participate each year, including some Russell Group programs. You call universities directly on results day (August 14, 2026) or before.
UK tuition for international students: £22,000–£38,000/year. Living costs in London average £1,500/month. See our full guide: Study in the UK.
USA
US admissions timelines vary enormously by school type. Many large state universities use rolling admissions — they review applications as they arrive and still have spots in April or May. Typical rolling deadlines for Fall 2026: University of Illinois (May 1), Penn State (rolling through summer), Arizona State (July 1 for international). Elite private universities closed in January 2026. However, the Common App is still accepting applications at hundreds of rolling-admission schools right now.
Tuition ranges from $12,000/year (state universities) to $60,000/year (private). See our guide: Study in the USA.
Canada
Canadian university applications go directly to each institution. Most large universities had Fall 2026 deadlines in January–March 2026 — University of Toronto closed January 15, UBC February 1, McGill January 15. However, some schools still accept late applications: University of Calgary, Manitoba, and several Ontario colleges have rolling admissions into May and June. IRCC processing times for student visas are 4–8 weeks, so apply to the university first, then submit your study permit immediately upon receiving your offer letter.
See our full guide: Study in Canada.
Australia
Australia has two main semesters. Semester 2 (July 2026 start) is still available with applications typically due by May 2026 at most Group of Eight universities. International applications go directly to universities or via the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) in New South Wales. UniMelb, ANU, and UNSW all accept Semester 2 international applications. Student visa (subclass 500) processing: 4–6 weeks. Apply now to leave time for visa processing.
See our guide: Study in Australia.
France
France uses two main channels. Campus France DAP (Demande d'Admission Préalable) for students from 55 countries closed in January–March 2026 depending on your home country. If you missed DAP, you can still apply directly to universities for certain programs — English-taught Master's programs especially. Sciences Po, HEC, ESSEC have their own international portals with deadlines in March–June 2026. Grandes Écoles preparatory classes (CPGE) are closed. Engineering schools and business schools may still have openings.
See our full guide: Study in France.
Austria
Austrian public universities accept applications until September 5, 2026 for Winter Semester 2026/27. This is one of Europe's most generous deadlines. Most programs at University of Vienna, TU Vienna, and Graz have open admission for EU students. Non-EU students need the Studienplatznachweis (university eligibility proof). Medicine requires the MedAT — that test registration closed in March 2026, so medicine entry is closed. All other subjects: still open.
See our full guide: Study in Austria.
Switzerland
Swiss universities are decentralized. ETH Zurich closes its international applications on December 15, 2025 (already passed) for Master's. University of Zurich: April 30, 2026 for some programs, others by June 30. EPFL Master's: December 2025 (passed). For Bachelor's, most cantonal universities accept applications until June–July 2026. Check each university's admissions portal individually. Tuition: CHF 720–1,500/year for Swiss residents; up to CHF 5,000–8,000 for non-EU.
See our full guide: Study in Switzerland.
Italy
Italy's application system runs through Universitaly for most public universities plus direct university portals. Deadlines for Winter Semester (October start) typically fall between June and August 2026, but vary widely. Politecnico di Milano: June 2026. La Sapienza Rome: July 2026 for international students. The dichiarazione di valore (credential evaluation) takes 1–3 months — start that process now even before applying. Some programs with accesso programmato (limited places) require entrance tests in May–June 2026.
See our full guide: Study in Italy.
Spain
Spain's public universities admit students after the Spanish university entrance exam (EBAU/PAU), which runs in June 2026. International students can apply via UNED credential evaluation (pruebas de acceso) or directly if their home country qualification is recognized. Deadlines: June–July 2026 for most public universities. Private universities (IE, ESADE, Carlos III) have rolling deadlines and many still accept applications. Non-EU students need a student visa from the Spanish consulate — allow 6–8 weeks after receiving your admission letter.
See our full guide: Study in Spain.
Ireland
The Central Applications Office (CAO) deadline for September 2026 entry passed in February 2026. However, Irish universities also accept direct applications for postgraduate programs and many international undergraduate programs independently of CAO. University College Dublin, Trinity College, and UCC all have international offices handling late applications until June–July 2026. IELTS 6.0–6.5 required at most institutions. Tuition: €10,000–€25,000/year for non-EU students.
See our full guide: Study in Ireland.
Poland
Polish universities have been growing rapidly with international students. Most public universities use the IRK online portal (or a university-specific version) with application windows typically opening in April–May 2026 and closing in July 2026. Warsaw University, AGH Krakow, and Wroclaw University all have English-taught programs. Tuition: €2,000–€5,000/year for international students. Poland is one of the most affordable EU study destinations.
See our full guide: Study in Poland.
Turkey
International students in Turkey apply either through the YÖS exam (university entrance for foreigners) or directly using secondary school grades. YÖS exams are held by individual universities from April–June 2026. Many universities also accept the SAT, ACT, or Abitur in lieu of YÖS. Application periods: April–July 2026 for October entry. Tuition at state universities: $300–$700/year. At foundation universities: $5,000–$18,000/year. Istanbul, METU, and Bilkent are the most internationally recognized options.
See our full guide: Study in Turkey.
Japan
Japan has two main scholarship and admission paths. The MEXT scholarship application — the most comprehensive government scholarship — runs through Japanese embassies in April–May 2026. This is happening right now. Contact your local Japanese embassy immediately. For direct university applications (October 2026 start), Waseda, Keio, and Tokyo University all have deadlines ranging from May–July 2026 depending on program. Japanese language programs run on a different calendar — April entry only at most language schools.
See our full guide: Study in Japan.
South Korea
The Korean Government Scholarship Program (KGSP/GKS) — the flagship full scholarship — had its 2026 university track deadline in February–March 2026, and the self-recommendation track closed in April 2026. Those rounds are closed. However, universities accept direct international applications independently: most Korean universities have a Spring semester (March) and Fall semester (September) entry. For Fall 2026 entry, application deadlines at Yonsei, Korea University, and SKKU fall in April–June 2026. Act now.
See our full guide: Study in South Korea.
China
The Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) closed in March–April 2026 — that round is complete. Direct university applications for September 2026 entry are still open at most institutions until May–June 2026. Peking University: May 31. Fudan: June 30. Zhejiang University: June 30. English-taught programs at C9 League universities are well-regarded internationally. Tuition: ¥26,000–¥45,000/year (approx. €3,300–€5,700). Apply directly via university websites — the process is straightforward.
See our full guide: Study in China.
Russia
The Russian government offers the Rossotrudnichestvo quota scholarship for international students. Applications for 2026 entry ran from January–April 2026 — that window is closing now. Check with Russia's cultural center (Rossotrudnichestvo) in your country immediately. For self-funded students, Russian universities accept direct applications until July–August 2026 with competitive tuition: $2,000–$5,000/year. MSU, SPbGU, and MIPT are internationally recognized. Note: visa processing for Russian student visas can take 4–8 weeks.
See our full guide: Study in Russia.
New Zealand
New Zealand universities run two semesters: Semester 1 (February) and Semester 2 (July). For July 2026 entry, applications are accepted until July–August 2026 — New Zealand has some of the most flexible international enrollment windows. Auckland, Victoria Wellington, and Otago all accept mid-year entry. Tuition: NZD 25,000–$45,000/year (approx. €14,000–€25,000). Student visa processing: 4–6 weeks.

What to Do If You Missed the Deadline
Missing a deadline is not the end. Here are your concrete options:
1. Switch to a Later Intake
Many countries offer a Spring/Summer semester entry. Australia's Semester 1 (February 2027) opens applications around September 2026. Japan's April 2027 semester applications begin in November 2026. The Netherlands has a February intake for some programs. Plan now, apply then.
2. Apply to Schools with Rolling Admissions
US state universities, Canadian colleges (not universities), Polish universities, Turkish state universities, and Chinese universities all use rolling admissions or have late application windows. Your 3.5 GPA matters more at these schools than at a school that's already full.
3. Use Clearing (UK)
UCAS Clearing opens on July 5, 2026. Thousands of places become available. You don't need to wait for your A-Level results — you can register interest from July 5. On August 14 (results day), call universities directly with your grades.
4. Prepare for Stronger Applications Next Cycle
Use the extra time to improve your language certificate, get research experience, or improve your grades. A student who applies in September 2026 for Winter Semester 2027/28 with a stronger profile often gets better choices than a rushed application now.
5. Consider Foundation or Language Programs
Germany's Studienkolleg (foundation year) accepts applications for the winter semester until July 2026. Completing it in one year puts you into a German bachelor's program for Winter Semester 2027/28 with full language proficiency. A similar logic applies to UK foundation years at many universities.
Last-Minute Application Tips
Get your documents ready first. Before you submit any application, have these ready: official transcripts, translated and apostilled; language certificate (IELTS, TOEFL, TestDaF, or equivalent); two or three academic references; a statement of purpose or motivation letter; and a copy of your passport. Applications stall because documents arrive late — not because of late applications themselves.
Email the admissions office. If a portal shows "closed," email the international admissions office directly. Explain your timeline. Many universities make exceptions for strong candidates — especially in programs that are still below capacity.
Prioritize visa processing time. Germany student visa: 6–12 weeks. UK Student visa: 3–8 weeks. US F-1 visa: 2–8 weeks. Australia subclass 500: 4–6 weeks. If you're applying in June for an October start, you have enough time — but only if you apply to the consulate the moment you receive your offer letter.
uni-assist processes take time. For Germany: uni-assist needs documents before the July 15 university deadline, not on July 15. Submit to uni-assist by June 30 to be safe. They charge a processing fee of €75 for the first university, €30 for each additional.
Frequently Asked Questions
When does Winter Semester 2026/27 actually start?
Most European universities begin in October 2026. Germany and Austria typically start between October 1–15. The Netherlands: September 1. UK academic year starts late September. Outside Europe: Australia Semester 2 starts July 2026; Japan October entry is available at some universities; South Korea Fall semester starts September.
Is July 15 really the hard deadline for Germany?
It's uni-assist's document submission deadline, not a portal closure date. However, some German universities set their own earlier deadlines — TU Munich's are often in May. Always check both the university's own deadline AND the uni-assist deadline. Submit whichever is earlier.
Can I still apply to UK universities in April 2026?
Yes, via UCAS Extra. Extra is open until July 4, 2026, for applicants who applied by the January deadline but have no offers or declined all offers. You can add one course at a time. If you didn't apply in January at all, you need to wait for Clearing in July.
What are my options if I missed Canada's deadlines?
Check Canadian community colleges and polytechnics — they often have rolling admissions well into June and July. Also look at smaller universities: University of Manitoba, University of Regina, and University of Prince Edward Island have later deadlines. If all else fails, plan for January 2027 entry, which many Canadian universities offer.
I need a scholarship. Is it too late?
For government scholarships like DAAD, Erasmus+, KGSP, MEXT, and CSC — most 2026 cycles have closed or are closing now. However, university-specific scholarships remain available: many universities award merit scholarships automatically at admission. The Netherlands' Holland Scholarship has a May 1 deadline. Private foundations and corporate scholarships often have later deadlines — search nationally in your home country.
What documents do I need for a German student visa?
University admission letter, proof of funds (Sperrkonto with €11,904 for one year), health insurance, valid passport, biometric photo, APS certificate (for students from China, India, Vietnam), and language certificate. Book your German embassy appointment as soon as you have your admission letter — slots fill up fast in summer.
How does Australia's Semester 2 application work?
Apply directly to the university — most have their own online portals. After receiving an offer letter, accept it and pay the deposit. The university then issues a Confirmation of Enrollment (CoE), which you need for your Student visa (subclass 500) application on ImmiAccount. Allow at least 4–6 weeks for visa processing. Semester 2 at most Australian universities starts in late July 2026.
Is it worth applying this late, or should I wait for next year?
It depends on your situation. If you can still apply and get a visa in time, apply now. For Germany with its July 15 deadline, there is still plenty of time. For the Netherlands numerus fixus programs, if you miss May 1, wait and prepare properly. A well-prepared application next cycle beats a rushed one now. But don't dismiss open deadlines — Germany, Austria, New Zealand, Australia, and many US schools are genuinely still open.
