The summer semester 2027 starts between February and April depending on the country. Germany's application deadline for public universities is January 15, 2027 for most programmes, while the Netherlands closes applications as early as April 1, 2026 for courses starting in February 2027. Miss these dates and you wait another six months. This guide lists every major deadline so you can plan backwards from today.

Why Summer Semester Deadlines Catch Students Off Guard

Most students apply for winter semester — the "standard" intake — so summer semester processes are less documented online. Fewer universities even offer a summer intake. In Germany, roughly 40% of degree programmes admit students only in winter. But the remaining 60% do have a summer start, and for those programmes, missing the January deadline means a six-month delay.

A bigger trap: language proficiency certificates and blocked accounts (Sperrkonto) take 4–8 weeks to arrange. If the deadline is January 15, you need to start the Sperrkonto process by late November 2026 at the latest.

Germany: Summer Semester 2027 Deadlines

German universities (Hochschulen) use a central portal called uni-assist for most international applications, though some large universities like TU Munich and LMU Munich have their own portals.

Most public universities (uni-assist)January 15, 2027Summer semester starts April 1
TU Munich (TUM)December 15, 2026Own portal, earlier deadline
LMU MunichJanuary 15, 2027Some programmes: December 1

Semester dates: Summer semester 2027 runs from approximately April 1 to September 30, 2027 at most German universities. Lectures typically start mid-April.

Non-EU students need to arrange a Sperrkonto (blocked bank account) showing €11,208 in funds before the visa appointment. See our proof of funds guide for exact amounts and approved providers.

Austria: Summer Semester 2027

WU Vienna (Business)December 15, 2026March 1, 2027

Austria's summer semester is notably earlier than Germany's — it starts March 1, meaning application deadlines fall in late November and December 2026. Budget roughly €900–€1,200/month for Vienna; Graz and Innsbruck run €700–€900/month.

Netherlands: Spring Semester 2027

Dutch universities call it the "February intake" or "spring semester". It is less common than in Germany — only about 30% of programmes offer it — but it exists at most major research universities.

The Netherlands has some of the earliest deadlines in Europe — Amsterdam closes in October 2026 for a February 2027 start. Apply via the university's own portal (Studielink for Bachelor's, direct portals for Master's). Tuition for EU students: €2,530/year; non-EU: €8,000–€20,000/year.

Sweden and Nordic Countries: Spring 2027

Swedish universities use the Antagning.se portal for Bachelor's admissions. Master's programmes at Swedish universities typically apply directly.

France and Belgium: Semester 2 Intakes

French grandes écoles and universities rarely offer February intakes for full degrees. However, exchange students and some Master's programmes at Sciences Po, INSEAD, and HEC Paris have January/February starts.

  • Sciences Po Paris (exchange): September application for February intake — deadline approximately September 30, 2026
  • INSEAD MBA (January cohort): Rolling admissions; final deadline around November 2026
  • KU Leuven (Belgium): March 1, 2027 for most programmes; February start possible for some
  • UCLouvain (Belgium): February 1, 2027 for September start; limited February intake

Japan and South Korea: Spring Intake 2027

Asian universities almost exclusively start in April (Japan) or March (South Korea).

Your Month-by-Month Action Plan

Working backwards from a January 15, 2027 German deadline:

MonthAction
August 2026Research programmes, shortlist 5–10 universities
September 2026Take/retake IELTS or TOEFL; request transcripts
October 2026Submit Netherlands and Swedish applications (October deadlines!)
November 2026Open Sperrkonto (Germany); apply to Austrian universities; request motivation letter drafts
December 2026Submit German applications; Swiss and Norwegian deadlines
January 2027German uni-assist deadline (Jan 15); Japanese graduate applications

Documents You'll Need for Most Applications

  • Undergraduate transcripts (official, apostilled — see our apostille guide)
  • Degree certificate or graduation letter
  • English/German language certificate (IELTS 6.0–7.0, TestDaF 4, DSH 2)
  • Motivation letter (1–2 pages)
  • Two academic reference letters
  • CV/résumé
  • Passport copy
  • Application fee (€30–€75 for uni-assist; free at many Nordic universities)

For German visa applications, additionally: Sperrkonto confirmation, health insurance proof, accommodation letter. See our full study in Germany guide for the complete checklist.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Confusing "application deadline" with "document deadline". Some universities accept the online application by January 15 but require hard-copy documents by a different date — sometimes earlier. Always check both.

Assuming all programmes have a summer intake. Before spending time on a motivation letter, verify the programme page actually lists a summer/spring start. Many German engineering and medicine programmes are winter-only.

Forgetting the visa processing time. A German student visa takes 4–12 weeks from a non-EU country. If you get an acceptance in March 2027, a semester starting April 1 leaves almost no time. Apply the moment you have a conditional offer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the summer semester as good as the winter semester in Germany?

For most programmes, yes. The teaching quality and degree content are identical. The main difference is cohort size — winter intakes tend to be larger, so summer students sometimes have a more personalised first semester. Social events (orientation, Erstsemesterparty) are typically smaller in summer.

Can I start a Master's in Germany in summer semester?

Most German Master's programmes admit students in both summer and winter. Check the specific programme's admission page — it will state "Wintersemester und Sommersemester" or "nur Wintersemester". About 60% of programmes at research universities offer summer admission.

What if I miss the January 15 German deadline?

You have two options: apply for winter semester 2027 (deadline typically July 15, 2027) or contact universities directly — some have limited places and accept late applications. Direct-admission universities (those not using uni-assist) sometimes have more flexibility.

Do I need a German language certificate for English-taught Master's?

No. If the programme is fully taught in English, you only need an English proficiency certificate. German language skills may help for daily life but are not an admission requirement for English-taught programmes.

How early should I apply to Dutch universities for February 2027?

The major Dutch universities close in October 2026 — that is 16 months before your graduation if you're starting a Master's in February 2027. Start shortlisting in August 2026 at the latest and prepare language certificates by September.

Does Korea have a February semester intake?

Korean universities use a March start for their regular spring semester. KAIST is an exception with a February intake for some graduate programmes. Most exchange programmes at Korean universities operate on the March/September cycle.

Can non-EU students apply for the Swedish spring semester?

Yes. Sweden's Antagning.se portal is open to all nationalities for Bachelor's programmes. Non-EU/EEA students pay tuition fees (SEK 80,000–140,000 per year), unlike EU students who study for free. Scholarships via the Swedish Institute cover tuition and living costs for competitive applicants.

What is the cheapest country with a February/spring semester?

Germany is the standout — most state universities charge only a semester fee of €150–€350 for all students including non-EU. Austria (€726/semester for non-EU) and Nordic countries (free for EU, costly for non-EU except Norway) follow. See our free tuition guide for full comparisons.
